The museum as interdisciplinary hub

Mainstream European museums and art institutions are increasingly cross-pollinating their programming with non-visual art disciplines ranging from design and contemporary dance to classical music, pop music, and club culture. What does this interdisciplinarity mean to institutional identity, audience building across demographics, and traditional museum mediums? How can museums best accommodate performance, dance troupes, or technically complex digital works? A look at the opportunities – and challenges – of increasingly flexible boundaries in the museum context.
Sam Bardaouil is the director, with Till Fellrath, of Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin. Together, they have collaborated with over 70 museums worldwide through their interdisciplinary curatorial platform Art Reoriented. They were curators of the Lyon Biennale in 2022 under the title ‘Manifesto of Fragility’. At the Venice Biennale, they were curators of the French pavilion in 2022, the Lebanon pavilion in 2013, and the United Arab Emirates pavilion in 2019. In Berlin, they were associate curators at the Gropius Bau from 2017 to 2021. 
Ligia Lewis works as an artist, choreographer, and director. She presents her work on stage, in a gallery or museum, through film or exhibition formats. Lewis’s works are often marked by physical and emotional intensities in which comedy and tragedy collide. Through her work, the performer and audience confront a confluence of processes that disrupt normative conceptions of the body. At the same time, she negotiates the ghostly traces of history, memory, and the un/known. 
András Szántó advises museums, foundations, educational institutions, and corporations on cultural strategy and program development, worldwide. He earned his PhD in sociology from Columbia University. A widely published author, his writings have appeared in The New York Times, Artforum, Artnet News, and The Art Newspaper, among other publications. As a consultant, he advises some of the world’s leading cultural institutions and corporate art programs. He has lectured on art business at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art and has directed the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he helped launch and oversee the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium, a series of seminars for museum directors. He is a frequent moderator of the Art Basel Conversations series. Born in Budapest, he has curated exhibitions on Hungarian art of the 1960s and 1970s. His most recent books are The Future of the Museum (2020) and Imagining the Future Museum (2022). He lives in Brooklyn.
